The Old Man and the Old Woman planned to go to the annual carnival at the village's shrine together with Princess Melon.
And so, they went to a town for hiring a palanquin.
今年の鎮守様の御祭りには、瓜子を御参りに連れて行こうと思って、爺と婆とは御駕籠を買いに、二人で町へ出かけました．

During their abscence, Princess Melon shut the door tightly and was weaving in the house.
Then, a Goblin came and asked in a disguised voice.
"Please open this door a little bit!"
留守にはピッタリと戸を閉めて、中で瓜子姫がハタを織っていますと、天邪鬼がやって来て作り声をして、この戸を少しだけ開けてくれと言いました．

Carelessly, Princess Melon slightly opened the door.
瓜子は、ついウッカリと戸を細目に開けてやると・・・

The Goblin thrust his fearful hand in.
・・・それから恐ろしい手を入れて・・・

The Goblin fully opened the door.
He said "Well, Melon! I will take a persimmon fruit of the backyard for you."
And he went to the backyard with her.
・・・あまのじゃくが戸をガラリと開けました．裏の柿の実を取ってあげましょう瓜子さんと言って、瓜子を裏の畑へ連れて出て・・・

And the Goblin stripped her naked and bound her to a persimmon tree.
・・・裸にして柿の木へ縛りつけました．

The Goblin disguised himself by wearing Melon's dress.
And he was calmly weaving.
そうして天邪鬼が瓜子の着物を着て、化けて知らぬ顔をして、機を織っています．
