ＷＥＢ絵本「雀と啄木鳥」

昔の昔、雀と啄木鳥とは二人の姉妹であったそうです．

親が病気でもういけないという知らせの来た時に、雀はちょうどお歯黒を付けかけていましたが、直ぐに飛んで行って看病をしました．

それで今でも頬っぺたが汚れ、嘴も上半分だけはまだ白いのであります．

啄木鳥の方は紅をつけ白粉をつけ、ゆっくりおめかしをしてから出かけたので、遂に大事な親の死に目に逢う事が出来ませんでした．

Long long ago, a Sparrow and a Woodpecker were sisters.
One day, they were told that their parent was in a critical condition.
Then, the Sparrow was making up her face.
But the Sparrow immediately flew to the parent for nursing.
So, her cheek is still dirty and the upper half of her bill is still white.
The Woodpecker was putting rouge and powder on her face at a slow pace.
After she finished the makeup, she went out.
So, the Woodpecker couldn't be there when her parent died.

だから雀は姿は美しくないけれども、いつも人間の住む所に住んで、人間の食べる穀物を、入用なだけ食べることが出来るのに、啄木鳥は御化粧ばかり綺麗でも、朝は早くから森の中を駆け歩いて、がっか・むっかと木の皮を叩いて、一日にやっと三匹の虫しか食べることが出来ないのだそうです．

そうして夜になると、木の空洞に入って、おわえ、嘴が病めるでやと泣くのだそうです．

And so, the Sparrow can live in the place where people live though she isn't good-looking.
And she can eat grain for humans as much as she likes.
Though the Woodpecker is beautiful, she must run around woods from early morning.
And she pecks bark and can eat only three worms a day.
When night comes, the Woodpecker enters a hole of a tree.
And she cries "Oh! Something is wrong with my bill."
