そうして、もしや兄様がそこいらに、いらっしゃりは仕舞いかとソッと呼んで見ました．
「ルル兄さま・・・」
けれども広い御殿のどこからも何の返事もありません．
遥かに遥かに向うまで続いている銀の廊下がピカピカと光っているばかりです．
ミミは悲しくなりました．
「兄さんはいらっしゃらないのか知らん」と思いました．
Then, Memie thought that her brother might be there.
And she tried calling him tenderly.
"Ruroo, my dear brother......"
However, no answer was given from anywhere in the large Palace.
Only the silvery corridor extending faraway was glittering.
Memie got sad.
She thought, "My brother may not be here."

その時でした．御殿の奥のどこかからか、「カアーン、カアーン」という鉄鎚の音と一緒に懐かしい懐かしいルルの歌う声が水を震わせて聞こえて来ました．
「ミミよ　ミミよ　オオ　いもうとよ・・・くらい　みずうみ　オオ　ならぬかね・・・ひとり　ながめて　オオ　なくミミよ
「ちちは　ならない　アア　かねつくり・・・あにも　ならない　アア　かねつくり・・・ミミを　のこして　アア　みずのそこ
「ミミよ　なけなけ　エエ　みずうみが・・・ミミの　なみだで　エエ　すむならば・・・かねも　なるやら　エエ　しれぬもの」
At that time, a dear singing voice of Ruroo made the water tremble.
And she could hear his voice coming from somewhere in the Palace with clangs of hammering.

Memie! Memie! Oh, my sister......
The lake is dark. Oh, the bell doesn't sound......
She looks at it alone. Oh, Memie cries!
Ah, her father made a silent bell......
Ah, her brother made another silent bell......
I left Memie alone;
Ah, I sank to the bottom of the water;
Memie! Cry and cry!
If her tears make the lake clear, the bell may sound, eh.

湖の女王様は金剛石の寝椅子の上に横になって、ルルの歌を聞いておられました．
そうして、ルルが陸に残したミミの事を悲しんで歌っている事を知られますと、湖の女王様は思わず独り言を云われました．
「ああ・・・私は可哀想な事をした．ルルを湖の底へ呼ぶ為に、私はルルが作った鐘を鳴らないようにした．そうしてルルがそれを悲しがって、湖へ身を投げるようにした．その為に可哀想なミミは、独りポッチになってしまった．さぞ私を怨んでいるだろう・・・
けれども私は、そうするより他に仕方なかった―――
―――この湖の水晶のような水は、この御殿のお庭にある大きな噴水から湧き出している．その噴水が壊れると、湖の水がだんだん上の方から濁って来る．そうして、その濁りが次第次第に深くなって底まで届くと、この湖に住んでいる者は皆、死んでしまわなければならない．
―――その大切な噴水がまた壊れて仕舞った．これを直す者はルルしか居ない．だから私はルルを呼び寄せるほかに仕方がなかった―――
―――私はこの前にも、こうしてルルの父親を呼んだ．その前にも、その又前にも、噴水が壊れるたんびに、何人も鍛冶屋や鐘つくりを呼び寄せた．けれども、そんな人達はみんな、自分ひとりで、勝手に陸へ帰ろうとした為に、途中で悪い魚に食べられてしまった―――
―――ルルは今、噴水を直しながら歌を歌っている．妹の事を悲しんで歌を歌っている．陸に残った妹もどんなにか悲しいであろう．
今度こそは用が済んだら、途中で危ない事の無いようにして、妹の所へ送り返してやりましょう．鐘も鳴るようにしてやりましょう―――
―――ああ、ほんとに可哀想な事をしました」
この時、ミミはルルの歌を頼りに、やっと女王様のお部屋の前まで、たどり着いておりました．
そうして、女王様の独り言をすっかり聞いて仕舞ったのでした．
ミミは女王様がルルとミミの事を可哀想に思っておられる・・・そうしてルルをおかに返してやろうと考えておられる事を知りますと、胸がいっぱいになりました．
The Queen of the lake was lying on a courch of diamond and was listening to Ruroo singing.
She knew that Ruroo was sad and sang for Memie left on the land.
And so, she said to herself unconsciously.

Ah...... I made a sad thing;
In order to call Ruroo to the bottom of the lake, I muted the sound of the bell which Ruroo made;
I made him worry about that. And I made him throw himself into the lake;
So, Memie became alone pitifully;
I'm sure that she has a grudge against me...... However I had no choice but to do so......
------ The crystal water of this lake is welling out from the big fountain in the courtyard of this Palace;
If the fountain breaks, the water of the lake begins to get muddy from the surface gradually;
If the muddiness comes down and reaches the bottom, all of the inhabitants of this lake must die;
------ The important fountain broke again;
Ruroo is the only person who can repair it;
So, I had no choice but to call him......
------ In this way, I called Ruroo's father before;
Furthermore, every time the fountain broke, I called a blacksmith or a bell founder again and again;
However, all of these persons went back toward the land on their own without her knowledge;
So, they were eaten by evil fishes on the way......
------ Repairing the fountain, Ruroo is now singing;
Worrying about his sister, he is singing;
His sister on the land must be deeply saddened;
When the work finishes, I will return him to his sister without danger on the way;
And I will restore the bell......
------ Ah! I made a pitiful thing indeed.

At that time, Memie already got to the door of the living room of the Queen with the help of Ruroo's singing voice.
And she listened to the Queen talking to herself entirely.
Memie knew that the Queen felt pity for Ruroo and Memie and that she would return Ruroo to the land. And so, her heart filled with deep emotion.

その時、女王様は立ち上がって寝部屋へ行こうとされました．
ミミは思わず駆け込んで女王様の長い長い着物の裾に走り寄りました．
女王様はビックリして振り向かれました．
・・・ここは当たり前の人間がたやすく来る所ではないのに・・・と思いながら「お前はどこの娘かね・・・」とお尋ねになりました．
ミミは品よくお辞儀をしました．
そうして涙をいっぱい目に溜めながらお願いしました．
「私はミミと申します．ルル兄様に会いに参りました．どうぞ会わせて下さいませ」
「オオ．お前がルルの妹かや」と、女王様はミミを抱き寄せられました．
そうして、しっかりと抱きしめて静かな声で言われました．
「お前がルルの妹かや．お前が・・・お前が・・・まあ、何と云う可愛らしい娘であろう．ルルがお前の事を懐かしがるのも無理はない．悲しむのも無理はない．お前も、さぞ悲しかったであろう．淋しかったであろう．そうして私を怨んでいたであろう．許してたもれや．許してたもれや」
女王様は水晶のような涙の玉をはらはらとミミの髪の毛の上に落されました．
ミミは泣きじゃくりながら顔を上げて女王様に尋ねました．
「女王様．女王様は本当に・・・私達をおかに返して下さいますでしょうか」
「本当とも本当とも．私が今、言うた独りごとは皆偽りではないぞや．
あのルルが来て、あの噴水を直してくれなければ、この湖の中の者は皆死ななければならぬ．
それゆえルルを呼びました．それゆえお前にも悲しい思いをさせました．
どうぞどうぞ許してたもれや．それにしても、お前はよう来ました．よう兄様を迎えに来ました．
きっと二人は陸に返して上げますぞや．お前たちのお父さんのように悪い魚に食べられぬようにして・・・
そうして陸に帰ったならば鐘も鳴るようにして上げますぞや．
なれども、ルルがあの噴水を直してしまうまでは待ってたもれよ．それも、もう長い事ではない．
ミミよ、お聞きやれ．あのルルの打つ鎚の音の勇ましい事」
女王様とミミは涙に濡れた顔を上げて、ルルの振る鉄槌の音を聞きました．
At that time, the Queen stood up and was going to her bed room.
Memie unconsciously ran into the room and came near the train of the very long dress of the Queen.
The Queen surprisedly looked back.
She thought that ordinary people couldn't come here easily and said, "Where are you from......"
Memie bowed gracefully. And she asked with tears in her eyes.
"My name is Memie, so please your Majesty. I came to see my brother Ruroo. Could I be allowed to see him?"
"Oh! You are Ruroo's sister, are you?" the Queen said and drew Memie close.
Then, the Queen hugged Memie and said in a calm voice:

You are Ruroo's sister, are you?
You are...... You are......
Dear, what a pretty girl!
It is no wonder that Ruroo longs for you. No wonder he feels sad;
I'm sure you also feel sad. I'm sure you feel lonely. I'm sure you have a grudge against me;
Pardon me. Pardon me.

The Queen's crystal teardrops fell onto Memie's hair.
Memie looked up with sobs.
And she asked the Queen, "Your Majesty! Will your Majesty truly return us to the land?"

It's the truth;
It's the truth;
What I just now said to myself is wholly true;
If Ruroo didn't come here for repairing the fountain, all of the creatures in this lake would have to die;
For that reason, I called Ruroo;
And so, I made you sad;
I do beg your pardon;
But you came here admirably. I am glad that you came to see your brother;
I make sure to return both of you to the land;
I will give you a protection against evil fishes that ate your father......
And then, I will restore the sound to the bell when you are back;
However, please wait until Ruroo finishes reparing the fountain!
But he won't take long to do it;
Memie! Listen to Ruroo hammering bravely!

The Queen and Memie looked up with tears.
And they listened to the sound of the hammer which Ruroo was striking with.

ルルは湖の御殿の噴水を一生懸命につくろいました．
もう二度とふたたび壊れる事のないように、そうして、陸の鐘つくりや鍛冶屋さんが湖の女王様に呼ばれる事のないように、命がけで働きました．
そのうち振る鎚の音は、湖のふちにある魚の隠れ家や蟹の穴までも沁み渡るほど高く高く響きました．
「カーンコーン　カンコン
ミミにわかれてこの湖の、底にうちふるこの鎚のおと、ルルがうちふるこの鎚の音
カーンコーン　カンコン
泣いてうちふるこの鎚のおと、ないてたたいてこの湖の、水をすませやこの鎚のおと
カーンコーン　カンコン
ミミにあいたやあの妹に、おかへゆきたやあの故郷へ、そしてききたやあの鐘の音」
Ruroo was eagerly repairing the fountain of the Palace of the lake.
He was working for his life so that the fountain would never break and so that bell founders and blacksmiths on the land would never be called by the Queen.
The sound of hammering was so loud that it reached to hiding places of fishes and holes of crabs at the water's edge.

Claaaaaang! Clang!
I left Memie behind;
This is the sound of hammering at the bottom of this lake;
This is the sound of the hammer that I'm striking with;
Claaaaaang! Clang!
This is the sound of hammering with tears;
I'm striking with tears;
This is the sound of the hammer that will make the water clear;
Claaaaaang! Clang!
I want to see my sister Memie;
I want to go back to my hometown on the land;
And I hope to hear the sound of the bell.

ルルはとうとう噴水を立派につくろい上げました．
At last, Ruroo finished repairing the fountain very well.

玉のような澄み切った水の泡が嬉しそうにキラキラと輝きながら空へ空へ渦巻き昇って行きました．
Beady bubbles of the crystal water were shining joyfully. And they were going up in a whirl toward the sky.

その真上の濁った水が新しく噴き上がった水に追いのけられて、そこから明るい月の光りと清らかな星の光りが流れ込んで来ました．
もうこれから何万年経っても、この噴水が壊れる事はあるまいと思われました．
The muddy water right above the fountain was removed by the newly gushing water.
The bright moonlight and the clear starlights came into the lake through there.
It was thought that the fountain would never break even if tens of thousands of years passed.
