I-ii In 1960's a theory called plate techtonics began getting support. It said that the surface of the earth consisted of a number of plates some of which are continuously generated and melted. The force that moved them was said to be the mantle, which was moving slowly under the ground as if it had been in convection. Deep in the Atlantic, there was found a submarine ridge, where two plates had been generated eastward and westward. Wegener, who had been dead more than a quarter century after his solitary and fatal exploration, then had the primary problem of his hypothesis solved. With recent researches, scientists say that the force is actually different from convection, but his hypothesis, now theory, is still valid.
